Head First JQuery is yet another testimony of the effectiveness of the Head First series in delving deeply into new concepts while implementing both humor and visually compelling examples.

The book offers a number of entertaining site examples to learn from, including one with a Google map plug-in for locating sight-seeing of monsters p. Some of the more detailed highlights of the book include a date picker widget p. I like to put in a note for absolute beginners. Please be advised that I'd recommend you acquire the following skills in the stated order: Once beginners get to the Javascript component of study, a read of John Pollock's Beginner Javascript is the easiest transition into learning not only Javascript but also programming that I've yet to come across.

On a final note, I would recommend that any student of Web programming get a month-to-month membership with Lynda. The javascript and jquery titles seem to be some of the best. I recommend this book highly for learning jquery. I also like jquery novice to ninja for its' content. I find the head first one to be a little simpler to understand as it breaks things down to smaller understandable pieces.

Ninja isn't really for novice, it hits the ground running but that allows it to cover more ground if you like a more technical style. Head first books are more a casual read and do the exercise, relax, read My one pet peeve with o'rielly they sell a wonderful javascript book but they went deceptive and called it "heads first HTML5". I bought it for HTML5 ideas I loved Head First JavaScript. This book taught only the most basic Jquery. It's not at all comprehensive or deep. It spends considerable time explaining introductory Javascript.

I was very dissapointed that the end of the book takes a big tangent into very superficially introducing lots of PHP and MySQL but without actually teaching it: The problem: The code didn't work for me verbatim and without teaching PHP if it doesn't work you are kind of screwed. I abandoned the book after a few hours with mixed troubleshooting results.

In one example. As previously mentioned, the sample code is full of errors. The quality control is very poor. In one example, variable names in the book do not match the sample code easy to correct but annoying.

In another example, the project in the book goes from having a few lines of code to a complete page of code, but the code was never presented, had to copy from the finished project. I have read two other Head First books by a different author and I did not find a single error.

If you are relatively new to coding then, I would look for a different book.

Buy for others

I would rated this 4 stars otherwise. One person found this helpful. OK for the first chapter or two, but eventually the amount of dialogs, graphics, etc in the book detracts greatly from the subject material and simply takes too much time to read and follow along with.

The book is really helpful to learn jQuery and ajax methods to make your page dynamic. Its not boring, so its great to learn on your own!

Detailed explanation and solutions are available, which aids the self learning process. However, I don't think its a book that should be used by a complete beginners to programming. If you don't know what a loop is, you should probably wait for something a bit easier. And also a chapter sample.

That will probably give you more feedback if its the book for you. Overall, great book!!! I Definitely recommend it. Love how it is so user friendly and enjoyable to read.
