Auden called 'perhaps the greatest genius that ever lived' has inspired extremes of adulation and loathing. In this penetrating analysis, Bryan Magee outlines the range and depth of Wagner's achievement, and shows how his sensational and erotic music expresses the repressed and highly charged contents of the psyche.
He also examines Wagner's detailed stage directions, and the prose works in which he formulated his ideas, and sheds interesting new light on his anti-semitism. This new edition has been extensively revised. It includes a fresh chapter, 'Wagner as Music'. In the summer of , Walter Kirn - then a young novelist struggling with fatherhood and a dissolving marriage - set out on a peculiar, fateful errand: Thus began a fifteen-year relationship that drew Kirn deep into the fun-house world of an outlandish, eccentric son of privilege who, one day, would be shockingly unmasked as a brazen serial impostor and brutal double-murderer.

What is Kobo Super Points?
The book focuses on a marriage, the first half is told by the husband, the second half is told by the wife.
Their perspectives are so different that it honestly feels like two different books. However, it's an interesting concept and eye-opening in the places where their stories overlap.
There are a few twists and turns in the story that will surprise you, but nothing that will blow you away. My beef with the story was 1, I did not enjoy this book while reading it and 2, I found the two main characters and many others to be wholly unlikable. The main male character is an outright misogynist who nonetheless depends on the women of his life for everything; he truly comes across as a selfish, overgrown child throughout his adulthood.
The main female character brings to mind a Gillian Flynn-type character who is sinister and twisted at the core, yet puts on an imperviously smooth front. And despite the author trying to flesh out these characters and bring them to life, they still came across as shallow and, as I mentioned previously, entirely unlikable.
Despite not enjoying the book while reading it, I kept reading, hoping that the ending might bring some satisfaction. I can't say that I was satisfied when I finished it, but the main take-away I gleaned from the story is that marriage is smoke and mirrors; marriage is built upon secrets and lies as much as it is intimacy and truth.

Fates and Furies
I really do try to download what the top 20 books are on the New York Times Best sellers because I really trust that those books are amazing reads and would be a pleasure to grab at the end of the day. This book simply didn't resonate with me at all.
Here's the deal.
I can"t make it through 10 chapters. I would go back and read a little and then stop. I enjoyed reading for the love of reading.
And I read mystery thrillers , nonfiction and fiction this was dark it didn't seem to really have a purpose other than underlining the worst parts of what humans are made up off, and I just could not get into it. There are a number of people who love this book but I am not one of them. I'm not sure what to make of this one. It simply depends on how you frame what you're seeing.
What about the person we're married to? Both tall, confident, exuding charisma, they are the couple everyone wants to be, and be near. Lotto was once a child of privilege, the heir to a fortune, only to have it all taken away by his manipulative, agoraphobic mother. He runs on the fuel of adoration and popularity, but once his acting career doesn't materialize, he falls into a depression until he discovers his true talent, writing plays.
Mathilde is his muse, his inspiration, his business manager, the person who keeps their lives running as Lotto flickers in and out of the creative process. But why is she willing to put up with Lotto's mercurial nature, his desperate need to be adored, his feelings of abandonment from his family?
Fates and Furies tells Lotto's story first, seeing the marriage from his vantage point, and then switches halfway through to tell Mathilde's story, which provides an intriguing, complex perspective on incidents we've already seen. There are a lot of twists and turns in this book, some surprising, some not so surprising, and these are fascinating, flawed characters.
At times Lotto felt to me like a character from a Pat Conroy novel, not that that's a bad thing. I'm a huge fan of Lauren Groff, and her storytelling ability and her use of language is sensational. At times I marveled over her words but at times her prose was so weighty, so laden with metaphors and references to Greek mythology and Shakespeare that I found myself a little lost.
The last segment of Lotto's section was particularly confusing, as I couldn't figure out what was a dream and what was reality. But in the end, this is a fascinating and compelling book, an intriguing character study, and I can't get it out of my mind.
