Also it is well written. Oct 18, David Martin rated it liked it. Having gotten used to reading very deep, character driven series like Game of Thrones, it was an abrupt switch to read a novel in which character development and differentiation took a bit of a back seat to the action. That isn't the author's fault, per se, but I would be lying if I didn't say I wanted some depth added. That said, God bless this guy, he wrote this book in under two months so that its release could roughly coincide with the original release of the first Halo videogame, and he wrote the book within a universe that was still being developed as he wrote it.
So hats off for creating a generally compelling novel under duress. The battles, which drive much of the story, are predictable: Like many such stories, there is a meta-awareness that the author isn't about to kill every main character in a gun blaze, so the stakes feel low.
Unfortunately, the story of Reach is my favorite so far in the Halo canon, and I preferred the Reach video game's approach to the story to this one. For me, that means that the novels can't get much better plotwise unless they deviate from canon or head into some more ancillary events.
We'll see how that goes. Aug 12, Tyler rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: Anyone who likes Halo.

The story is told by the main person John, and has flash backs to and from the past. He has seen a lot of combat, but still hold on to his human side. He cares for all of the members of the team, and will never leave his team in a bad situation. I enjoyed the book, this was the third Halo book, and they have also had a lot of video games and one cartoon movie. I would recommend this book to all who enjoy a good sci-fi novel. Eric Nylund is the author of Halo: The Fall of Reach, a novel that acts as a prequel to Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo: First Strike, a sequel to Halo: The Flood and prequel to Halo 2, and a sequel to Halo 2, Halo: Ghosts of Onyx.
Eric Nylund actual job is as a writer for Microsoft Game Studios. His job is to develop character and story bibles, he write backstory, write game manuals, write game scripts. View 1 comment. Oct 24, Nathan rated it it was amazing Shelves: Originally I thought the book was going to be some kind of, mash up of random killing and plain old combat like the games can be.
Boy was I wrong. I am aware that the author had to go into the game and possibly even look up different halo history to keep the book as accurate as possible, which can be a tough job. Even so the book was still written and done very well. Every tim Originally I thought the book was going to be some kind of, mash up of random killing and plain old combat like the games can be.
Every time there was a part that referenced to the game itself I would always try to predict what would happen next. Something I think would have made it even better is if he took the book to the next level by adding in a few little sections here and there about the Spartans personal lives and relationships with each other and the people around them.
They may be scientific engineered military weapons, but they are still people after all. All in all the story was a lot better than I thought, and it got better as I continued, it wasn't rushed, it wasn't jumpy, and that is what makes it one of the best books I've ever read.
Sep 13, Ken rated it it was amazing Shelves: I was reading the gaming blog Kotaku as my daily routine when I saw a live action trailer for the latest Halo game, Halo: I was taken away immediate and noticed one of the commentors said that if you like this trailer, you definitely have to read the book The Fall of Reach by Eric Nylund.
The only experience I've had with Halo so far was a few minutes watching my friend play Halo 2 at his place, and so had doubts of whether I will understand or enjoy the story. In the end I decided to give I was reading the gaming blog Kotaku as my daily routine when I saw a live action trailer for the latest Halo game, Halo: In the end I decided to give it a try due to strong user feedbacks and I am glad to say that it was a worthwhile decision.
Nylund paints a thorough and vivid background of the Halo universe; from the beginnings of Master Chief as a child to his training and his battles with the Covenant.
This is a good story for people who are interested in Science Fiction in general and not necessarily for fans of the games. This book is based on a video game I was in the mood for a straight forward even simple story. Good guys vs bad guys, military space opera, aliens who want to conquer the universe, or burn it But these books there is a series based on the game are fun, action packed and really pretty well written.
We open with the "founding of" or "recruiting of" the Spartans. At the beginning of the book we know little or nothing about "The Covenant". These are our "bad guys" and they'd rather destroy a planet than leave it in human hands! So, enjoy, read, soak up all the wonderful mindless violence.
You can read something "worthwhile" later. Jan 11, Kim rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: Absolutely loved it. I'm such a fan of the games, and having that extra knowledge of everything made it a lot easier for me to read. I'm no army nut and I don't know a lot about gun power and different types of ships or army tactics - but having played all the halo games for years made it so much simpler to understand everything that was going on.
I love that I now have a further in-depth backstory to refer to for a lot of the characters.
Definitely recommend it for Halo fans wanting to engage more Absolutely loved it. Definitely recommend it for Halo fans wanting to engage more in the Halo universe! I'll be reading the sequels! I thought it was a good book and does a great job of explaining where Master Chief the game's main character comes from. I loved that part.
But of course there is a lot of war going on in the book and I didn't enjoy that. It is my first war novel and I'll admit that is not something I enjoy reading.
I won't continue the series. I also wish it had better cover art. I mean it looks like a cartoon! View all 6 comments. Apr 22, Liam rated it really liked it Shelves: Back in the day I was an enormous Halo fanboy. I played all the Bungie games, and read the reputable novels - listened to the soundtracks, even watched the fairly shitty anime tie-ins.
I used to say that it was the greatest universe of all time, which looking back may be a tad of an exaggeration. I maintain however that, for a dumb first-person shooter, the expanded universe that grew to encompass the games is unique in its quality and its depth.
Fall of Reach wasn't as great as I remember it being when I was in early high school, but it was still a lot of fun to read. Feb 05, Darrik rated it really liked it Shelves: This book is filled with action and a little adventure. From the very start you are cheering for the main character. The entire book you don't want to stop reading until you are done. Get the midnight oil ready as you are in for an action packed ride with this one.

Halo: The Fall of Reach by Eric S. Nylund
Jacob Keyes arrive at a terraformed planet to visit a 6-year old child named John. During the visit, Halsey explains to I have played and watched most of the videos regarding the Halo series. During the visit, Halsey explains to Keyes her intentions with the boy, and around other children because of a rare genetic marker they all have, which makes suitable for a program called SPARTAN-II.
Once the children arrive, they are to have callsigns hat use their first name and 3 numbers afterward. The children are to be drilled and trained for a duration of time. John shows great leadership to his trainees and is promoted to squad leader.
Later on in , the spartans undergo surgical enhancements that will turn them into the highly skilled super soldiers. However, over half of the 75 persons are either paralyzed or killed. The remaining spartans are given armored suits that act as exoskeletons, designed to move as quickly as the wearer thinks. Afterwards, John is further promoted to Master Chief Petty officer for his and his squads performance. The spartans soon get a priority shift because of an alien race known as "The Covenant" begin to decimate human colonies, and the high prophets declare the destruction of humanity as "the will of the gods".
Mendez, the commander of the spartans, soon leaves the spartans to train the next generation of super soldiers as John and his fellow Spartan-II's face the covenant for the first time. Overall, the beginning plot is great, and I cannot wait to read more from this series. Aug 05, Scarlett rated it liked it.
I thought this book was ok. I thought the storyline was actually very interesting. The beginning I especially thought was good, when it was talking about the kids who were basically kidnapped when they were 6 and then trained to be these super warriors. Then about halfway through I lost interest. Also it contained a lot of militar I thought this book was ok.
Also it contained a lot of military lingo that I'm just not familiar with so that lost my attention as well. Another thing I didn't like about the second half was this discrepancy with what year it was throughout the entire second half. The physical book said , but the audio book says John talks about having been picked to be a Spartan 25 years ago, which occurred in , so it seems would be correct.
But then later it's mentioned that a ship was remodeled in , so it just doesn't add up. That's a minor complaint though. I will say towards the end it gets back to John and the rest of the Spartans and that was better.
Overall it was interesting and actually makes me want to try out the game. But as a book I'm not quite sure it's for me. Sep 18, Aron rated it really liked it. Fall of Reach is a science fiction book by Eric S. The book is about how a group of Bio engineered soldiers codename Spartan. They tried to destroy all maps showing where earth is so the aliens cannot discover where their home world is. The book tells how the Spartans will not surrender but will die to the last man standing.
Fall of Reach talks about only one of the Spartans making it off the planet the rest die. This book exceeded expectations because it was action packed but also Halo: This book exceeded expectations because it was action packed but also has a fantastic storyline line that fits perfectly with the rest of the series.

The book has a few chapters that are very short and find that a negative because I just want longer chapter sometimes. I loved how the book goes so fluently over the different stories being told.
I recommend this book to people who like action stories or people who have played the videogames of the series. This book has tons of chapter about the war and fits perfectly with the games making the story complete. I find this book great I'm not much of a book reader but this book was good. This book kept me on my toes while going through each chapter and painted a great picture of what's happening in the book.
