So, I bought this one after seeing the star ratings online. That being said--it's okay, I guess. Whereas I felt that I couldn't stop reading the other book, I found myself setting this one down longer and longer between readings. I just finished part 1 about a week and a half ago and haven't really picked it up again.
I might go back to it, since it's a little early to give it up, but it's not like his latest book. The humor isn't quite as clever, the stereotyped priest is a little much in some scenes, and I still haven't really made a connection with any of the characters like I feel I should.
And even though I've been known to play a few online games before I'm not really big into video games overall , I started reading this book before I realized that it was set in one. I thought it was just satire based on game plots.
I think that did kill my momentum a little as well. But, the story so far is not terrible, just slow to start and a little silly for my taste. It has made me chuckle a few times, and you can definitely hear Croshaw's voice in the work.
Overall, I definitely wouldn't discourage you from reading the book. You may like it more--but I will recommend reading the first few sample chapters provided before you do. However, I will say that I admire how Croshaw doesn't do series so far.
That fad drives me crazy.

I picked this book up because I enjoy Yahtzee's YouTube channel with my husband. I will say that it was very easy to read the entire book in Yahtzee's voice and greatly added to my enjoyment.

I'm sorely tempted to buy the audio book, especially after hearing the sample, and I don't like audio books! It also really helped me to prepare for Yathzee's sense of humor. There were so many things in this book that made laugh.
I've highlighted more passages from this book than any other in the past year. It was like being asked to explain why old people should wear clothing. You've got sorcerers, undead, clerics, adventurers, etc.
At the same time, it's as much about high fantasy adventure as Sean of the Dead is about zombie movies. It's a delightful combination of strong story and satire.
As much as this book made me laugh, it was the characters and the story that kept me from putting the book down. Each of the main protagonists is endearing in their own way. Though I will admit I may have liked Slippery John more if he didn't keep referring to himself in the third person. That got very annoying very quickly, but it was quite consistent with the character. At the same time, I appreciated Yahtzee's less obvious jokes. At one point a character gets called out on saying the word "little" a lot: When I picked up on what was going on, I laughed even harder!

In a world full to bursting with would-be heroes, Jim couldn't be less interested in saving the day. His fireballs fizzle. He's awfully grumpy. Plus, he's been dead for about sixty years.
When a renegade necromancer wrenches him from eternal slumber and into a world gone terribly, bizarrely wrong, all Jim wants is to find a way to die properly, once and for all. On his side, he's got a few shambling corpses, an inept thief, and a powerful death wish.
